Abstract: This report presents results from a rapid assessment of fecal Sludge Management (FSM) system in sub-Saharan Africa countries. FSM in the context of this report refers to the activities required for the safe containment, collection/emptying, transportation, treatment and disposal/ reuse of fecal sludge (FS). Efforts to improve fecal sludge management in sub-Saharan Africa have recently scaled up, concentrated efforts are largely in low-income urban settlements- where the FSM challenge is glaring and often neglected. The WHO JMP on sanitation indicates that more than 80% of the 2015 populations in these countries rely on on-site sanitation facilities, with trends indicating a general positive trajectory in sanitation improvements across the board. This implies continued reliance on FSM in the region in the near future, with opportunities for innovation and expansion of FSM, including business models for improved latrine construction and emptying services.
