Abstract: This drought early warning bulletin for Kajiado County provides a comprehensive assessment of drought conditions as of January 2026, covering biophysical indicators including vegetation condition index, pasture and browse conditions, and water availability alongside socio-economic impacts on livestock production, access to resources, and food security. The report indicates that Kajiado County is in the ALERT phase with worsening trends across pastoral, agro-pastoral, and mixed farming livelihood zones. Key findings show below-normal rainfall in January (9.7 mm against long-term average of 48.6 mm), declining vegetation conditions with stressed vegetation in several wards, and deteriorating livestock body condition (52.4% borderline, 14.3% thin). Food insecurity affects 6.1% of households while 24.6% are vulnerable, with rising malnutrition risk among under-five children. The bulletin documents hotspots in Kajiado south, west, and parts of north, and recommends timely mitigation measures before the next rainy season.
