Abstract: The Women Empowerment for Resilient Rural Areas (WE4R) project is a GIZ-supported initiative operating in Kenya from 2024-2028 that strengthens women's rights, resources, and representation in sustainable land resource management. The project addresses the particular vulnerability of rural women to climate change impacts and disasters by promoting gender equality and gender-transformative approaches in land tenure, resource access, and decision-making participation. Working across policy development, multi-stakeholder engagement, and community-level implementation, WE4R generates evidence on land degradation, biodiversity conservation, climate adaptation, and sustainable land use to inform Kenya's national policies and Rio Conventions reporting. The project trains gender change agents as community champions who bridge gaps between national land laws and customary practices, facilitating women's understanding and claiming of land and property rights while fostering inclusive governance and climate-resilient livelihoods in rural areas.
