Abstract: This brief documents the socio-economic role of informal waste pickers in Kenya?s recycling chain and urges their inclusion in plastic treaty negotiations. Waste pickers contribute to over 50% of global plastic recovery but face occupational hazards, exclusion from policy planning, and minimal income (~$2/day). The report critiques current Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and circular economy models for failing to protect informal workers and proposes nine safeguards, including inclusive employment, legal recognition, procurement access, and infrastructure investments. It advocates for waste picker voices in UNEA-led negotiations and ILO frameworks for just transition.
