Coastal and Marine Resource Development (COMRED)

Download

Abstract: This strategic plan details COMRED?s 5-year approach to advancing coastal resilience and marine ecosystem stewardship along Kenya?s coast and the broader Western Indian Ocean. It builds on COMRED?s legacy of community-driven conservation, policy engagement, and seascape restoration. The plan identifies strategic goals around strengthening governance, co-management of marine ecosystems, financial inclusion through eco-credit schemes, and knowledge-based advocacy. It documents progress such as the Shimoni-Vanga marine co-management framework, Mombasa County Climate Policy 2021, and gender-inclusive conservation pilots. Threats include unregulated development, marine degradation, climate change, and weak policy enforcement. COMRED?s theory of change foregrounds citizen agency, diversified livelihoods, and locally led adaptation. Implementation strategies emphasize coalition building, monitoring systems, capacity-building, and funding partnerships. The plan positions COMRED as a Kenyan-led organization embedding science and equity in coastal climate governance and creating replicable models for community-driven conservation financing.
