Abstract: This research explores seasonal and inter-annual variability in solar and wind energy capacity factors over Africa using 40 years of ERA5 reanalysis data. Case studies in Senegal and Kenya highlight distinct meteorological drivers: the African Easterly Waves and the Turkana Jet respectively. Senegal exhibits stable solar outputs and seasonal wind shifts, while Kenya shows both solar and wind seasonality linked to El NiƱo Southern Oscillation patterns. It emphasizes hybrid system design potential and the importance of meteorologically informed planning for electrification.
