Abstract: This policy brief analyzes the shift from linear to circular economic models across African and Caribbean nations. It highlights trade as both enabler and barrier, detailing how international regulations affect circular flows of e-waste, plastics, and reused materials. Drawing on examples from regional circularity dialogues, SME innovation, and WTO environmental reform, the paper explores traditional circular practices and market gaps. Barriers include inadequate classifications, low data availability, and weak capture of value. Featured case studies range from plastics reuse in African construction to Caribbean food system circularity. The brief underscores the need for regional cooperation, standard harmonization, and inclusive frameworks to scale circular business models. It also discusses ISO and WTO discussions on global standards and calls for trade protocols that support just transition pathways. Positioned as a contribution to SDGs, this document offers actionable policy and investment guidance to foster socially inclusive, climate-smart circular economies.
