Abstract: This policy brief evaluates community-based conservation?s (CBC) role in climate adaptation for pastoralists in Northern Kenya. It identifies limitations?including restricted grazing access, weakened traditional institutions, and skewed benefit-sharing arrangements?resulting in reduced autonomous adaptation. Findings from the RARE Project show CBC sometimes criminalizes mobility and undermines resource-sharing practices. Recommendations include legal reforms, empowerment of indigenous governance, and equitable access to conservation lands during climate extremes. The study underscores socio-political dynamics and power asymmetries shaping adaptation success in ASAL counties.
