Abstract: This policy brief promotes satellite-based Earth Observation (EO) as a solution to manage the African Great Lakes, which sustain over 90 million people. Traditional monitoring methods face logistical and cost constraints. Through work in Lake Victoria?s Winam Gulf, the study integrates satellite and ground-truth data to track water quality, algal blooms, and invasive plants. It recommends a Living Labs approach for co-developing EO tools with local institutions, building capacity, and enabling SDG-aligned lake ecosystem protection across East Africa.
