ECOFISH Integrated Programme Management Unit
Abstract: This report summarizes outcomes from a four-day regional workshop held in Mombasa, Kenya in June 2023. The event brought together over 160 stakeholders from East Africa?including policymakers, researchers, and civil society?under the theme of leveraging the blue economy via sustainable small-scale fisheries and biodiversity conservation. Topics covered include integration of blue economy strategies in regional policy, demonstration projects on sustainable fishing, mangrove restoration, and inclusive governance. Participating countries included Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, and Madagascar. Sessions explored knowledge exchange, multi-level governance, and experiential learning, emphasizing their role in transforming aquatic resource management. Exhibitions and panels showcased innovations and community-led practices aimed at biodiversity protection and coastal resilience. The report concludes with guidance for aligning regional strategies with SDGs and Africa Agenda 2063.
