Abstract: This Kenya Standard (KS 2591:2014) codifies safety requirements for managing radioactive waste prior to final disposal. It includes guidance on characterization, segregation, containment, and transport of waste streams from medical, industrial, agricultural, and nuclear applications. The framework integrates IAEA guidelines and enforces occupational safety, radiation thresholds, long-term hazard control, and environmental safeguards. Licensing procedures and stakeholder duties are defined, and the document emphasizes precautionary and intergenerational equity principles. It sets technical and legal boundaries for Kenya?s radioactive waste strategy and aligns national regulations with global conventions like the Joint Convention on Safety of Spent Fuel and Radioactive Waste Management.
