Illegal Deforestation For Forest-Risk Agricultural Commodities Dashboard: Kenya

Forest Trends

Abstract: This analytical dashboard evaluates Kenya?s forest-risk agricultural commodities (FRACs) and their linkage to illegal deforestation. It explores governance weaknesses in forest conservation, focusing on agricultural expansion for cattle, maize, pulses, and cash crops like tea and tobacco. Agricultural conversion is responsible for roughly 85% of forest loss, especially in montane and coastal ecosystems. The dashboard maps policy interventions?Vision 2030, Climate Action Plan, timber bans?and outlines emissions tied to FRACs. Degazetting and excisions of protected forest areas drive unmonitored degradation. The study integrates trade data, emission estimates, and policy gaps to highlight intervention opportunities for halting FRAC-related deforestation and embedding carbon-smart incentives.
