Abstract: This workshop report summarizes findings and action points from a multi-stakeholder dialogue convened by CLASP in Nairobi in June 2022, focused on scaling solar-powered irrigation systems (SPIS) in Kenya. Despite Kenya being the leading market for solar water pumps in sub-Saharan Africa?accounting for 65% of sales between 2018?2021?SPIS adoption remains low due to barriers like high upfront costs, limited access to finance, low consumer awareness, and competition from fossil-fuel-powered pumps. The report identifies priority action areas including development of low-cost, high-performing technologies; creation of end-user financing models; bundling of SPIS with complementary tools (e.g. drip kits, storage tanks); tax reform to reclassify irrigation tech as agricultural equipment; establishment of farmer demonstration hubs; and partnership-building across the private sector and financial institutions. Recommendations also address training local technicians, leveraging producer cooperatives, and embedding SPIS into Kenya?s broader energy and agriculture policies.
