Abstract: This special edition of Rural 21 revisits the global progress of the bioeconomy over the past decade, especially in the Global South. It features diverse viewpoints?from policy analysis to grassroots innovation?examining bioeconomy?s promise for food security, climate mitigation, biodiversity, and industrial transformation. Key themes include the expansion of national bioeconomy strategies (with contributions on India, Brazil, and Germany), the 2024 Global Bioeconomy Summit in Kenya, and African-led circular bioeconomy innovation (e.g. cassava packaging, anti-malaria herbal drugs, eco-fertilizers). Civil society critiques highlight governance gaps, risks of biomass commodification, and the need for food sovereignty and inclusive stakeholder engagement. The report compiles insights from global forums such as GFFA and emphasizes links between agroecology, sustainability governance, and livelihoods.
