This health impact study investigates exposure levels to potentially harmful elements in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) communities in Kakamega and Vihiga Counties. Using biomonitoring of urine, hair, and nails, it correlates toxic element accumulation with environmental and dietary sources. The findings show elevated levels of mercury, arsenic, and lead, especially among miners consuming water from unregulated sources and foods grown near extraction sites. The study quantifies health risks and bioaccessibility of toxins using internationally benchmarked bioequivalents. It highlights systemic gaps in enforcement and access to safe water and food. The research emphasizes policy action, public health awareness, and environmental regulation to mitigate exposure. It advances Kenya?s understanding of extractive-linked pollution and its community-level implications.
