Abstract: This report offers a comprehensive overview of the status, drivers, and opportunities for sustainable finance within Kenya's banking sector. Commissioned by the Kenya Bankers Association with support from WWF-Kenya, it analyzes the extent to which Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations have been integrated into banking operations, guided by the KBA?s Sustainable Finance Initiative (SFI) Principles. Using literature review, case studies, and survey data, the report identifies progress in policy alignment, risk management, and innovation?while highlighting persistent gaps in sustainability reporting, data availability, and regulatory consistency. Key findings indicate that although over 90% of banks support SDG attainment and 80% monitor macroeconomic resilience, many lack standardized disclosure practices and harmonized taxonomies. The report urges stronger alignment between lending portfolios and national sustainability goals, proposes policy reforms and incentives (e.g., green tax breaks), and emphasizes the importance of digital infrastructure, capacity-building, and portfolio alignment with Kenya?s NDCs and the Paris Agreement.
