Global Mangrove Alliance
Abstract: This best-practice guide explores how Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK) can meaningfully inform mangrove conservation and restoration worldwide. Developed by researchers and practitioners from across the Global Mangrove Alliance, the document defines LEK as knowledge gained through generations of interaction with local ecosystems, encompassing traditional, Indigenous, and experiential understanding. The guide presents practical tools and methodologies for integrating LEK into mangrove research, planning, and adaptive management. It offers a systematic review of over 90 studies and features 21 global case studies?three from Kenya?that illustrate successful LEK-informed approaches across diverse coastal contexts.
