Abstract: This situation report by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) provides a snapshot of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Horn of Africa during February 2023. It documents the continued deepening of food insecurity, displacement, malnutrition, and protection concerns across Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia. Over 22 million people across the three countries are reported to be facing high levels of acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3+). In Somalia, the risk of famine remains for vulnerable groups, especially IDPs and agropastoralists. Kenya?s northern counties?including Turkana, Mandera, and Garissa?are experiencing Emergency levels of food insecurity and critical levels of acute malnutrition. Water scarcity, disease outbreaks (such as cholera), and rising food prices further compound the crisis. The report details DRC?s multisectoral response, including MPCA, WASH, emergency shelter, and protection services targeting IDPs and newly displaced populations. It also describes sector-specific updates from CCCM coordination, water quality testing, hygiene campaigns, and nutrition referrals, especially in hard-to-reach areas. Conflict and displacement, particularly in Laas Caanood, further complicate aid delivery.
