Abstract: The Food Waste Index Report 2024 presents updated methodologies and comprehensive global and national data on food waste measurement. It focuses on waste generated at household, retail, and food service levels. UNEP documents a growing challenge of aligning global food systems with sustainability and climate goals, particularly under SDG 12.3. The report highlights high-confidence data reporting from countries including Kenya, detailing improvements made since the 2021 baseline. It outlines measurement tiers?from modeled estimations to granular audits?and provides guidance on integrating food waste tracking into national policies, public-private partnerships, and municipal management systems. The report addresses data gaps, challenges in uniformity of definitions, and the need for behavior change at multiple scales. It proposes solutions through standardized guidelines, capacity building, and cross-sector cooperation. Country-specific examples and practical recommendations make it a valuable tool for climate action, circular economy initiatives, and urban planning.
