Abstract: This peer-reviewed study calculates the monetary value of consumptive water services provided by the Chyulu Hills watershed?an essential dryland ecological zone supporting multiple users across Makueni County. The research applies remote sensing tools such as ASTER DEM and Landsat imagery, integrated with GIS to delineate hydro-ecological zones. A range of water sources (springs, rivers, boreholes) are mapped and quantified. Using market pricing and productivity estimates, the total annual economic value of water consumption by domestic users, irrigation, livestock, and tourism is pegged at Ksh 46.6 million. The study reveals areas of high yield in Kibwezi-Makindu, and identifies key gaps in infrastructure and water governance. It argues for incorporating natural capital accounting into planning frameworks and calls for participatory, ecologically responsive watershed management. The study enhances understanding of ecosystem services and their integration into county-level development and climate adaptation.
