Climate-Smart Avocado Farming: A Community-Based Approach to Enhance Adaptation and Resilience

Abstract: This study investigates the role of community-based multi-stakeholder platforms in scaling climate-smart avocado farming among smallholder farmers in Kenya?s Upper Mara watershed (Bomet and Narok counties). The research applied the Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) framework to assess how social, economic, and policy factors affect farmer participation in climate-smart agricultural practices. It found that farmers? involvement in seedling production, market access, and knowledge sharing increased significantly due to multi-stakeholder collaboration. Logistic regression analysis showed that perceived economic and social benefits strongly influence participation. The study concludes that strengthening multi-stakeholder platforms and aligning institutional support can promote resilience, sustainable agriculture, and climate adaptation for marginalized farming communities.
