Abstract: The Kilifi Climate Change and Governance Platform (KCCGP) exemplifies community-led resilience and climate governance in Kenya’s coastal regions. Comprising 64 youth and women’s groups, KCCGP focuses on four thematic areas: loss and damage, livelihoods, carbon storage, and mangrove restoration. Operating primarily in Majaoni, Kidnundu, Mtongani, and Kilifi Creek, the platform collaborates with the county government to formulate and enforce localized climate and displacement policies. Through early warning dissemination via SMS and radio, the organization proactively alerts communities to impending hazards such as floods and sea-level rise, facilitating timely evacuation and safety. KCCGP supports displaced families through emergency funds, temporary shelter coordination, psychosocial support, and economic recovery initiatives, including jobs in mangrove nurseries and small business grants. Despite facing cultural and governance challenges—such as resistance to relocation and financial opacity—the platform continues to champion inclusive climate action. Its impact includes improved early warning systems, employment generation, and policy contributions under the Climate Change Act. By integrating traditional beliefs with formal governance and leveraging grassroots mobilization, KCCGP strengthens ecological conservation, disaster risk reduction, and climate justice for vulnerable populations in Kilifi County.
