Abstract: This investigative report critically examines the Northern Kenya Grassland Carbon Project (NKCP), implemented by the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT). It reveals issues surrounding consent, legality, and the claimed carbon offset outcomes from rotational grazing schemes across indigenous rangelands. The project, which spans over 2 million hectares in northern Kenya, purports to generate carbon credits through soil carbon enhancement tied to modified livestock grazing. The document highlights concerns regarding additionality, leakage, permanence, and cultural impacts?especially the undermining of traditional pastoral systems and failure to secure free, prior, and informed consent. The report argues that the offset scheme lacks transparency, legal clarity, and adequate monitoring, while being financially lucrative for developers and carbon purchasers.
