Abstract: This thematic chapter from the State of the River Nile Basin 2012 report examines the central role of agriculture in the Nile Basin. It outlines the sector?s contribution to GDP (12?43%), employment (32?94%), and food security across Nile riparian countries. The chapter highlights the dominance of rainfed subsistence farming?covering over 87% of cultivated land?alongside low productivity, limited irrigation (only 5.6 million hectares equipped), and increasing water stress due to agriculture consuming around 78% of Nile peak flow at Aswan. It classifies 15 farming systems, including smallholder rainfed, irrigated commercial estates, forest-based systems, and nomadic livestock production. The document also covers fisheries and aquaculture, which face challenges of overfishing, traditional techniques, and weak policy enforcement. Recommendations include scaling agro-processing, strengthening water-use efficiency, improving access to quality inputs, and integrating regional trade and environmental sustainability.
