Abstract: The implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers a transformative opportunity for advancing a just energy transition (JET) in Africa. While AI offers promising advantages for a cleaner and more resilient energy system, if not managed strategically, unintended consequences such as the environmental impact of AI hardware production, increased energy consumption, and heightened risks to national sovereignty may be overlooked. To ensure that the benefits of AI are not overshadowed by these unintended consequences, policymakers must develop frameworks that ensure the responsible deployment of AI while addressing potential socioeconomic disparities. This policy brief advocates for the development of strategic interventions to harness AI's potential for a JET, emphasising the need for AI solutions to be tailored to local contexts, ensuring they are affordable, accessible, and culturally appropriate.
