Abstract: Adaptation metrics under the UNFCCC have evolved considerably over the last twenty years, starting with measuring the degree of vulnerability of countries to monitoring and evaluating adaptation at the project, sectoral and subsequently national levels to more recently reviewing the adequacy and effectiveness of adaptation and support,as well as the collective progress made in achieving the global goal on adaptation following the adoption of the Paris Agreement in 2015. Despite the progress made,no common metrics have yet been agreed for adaptation under Annett Möhner UNFCCC Secretariat* the Convention, and the global goal on adaptation remains unspecified in respect of targets and indicators. Considering the context-specific nature of adaptation, the inherent methodological challenges and the evolving objectives for measuring adaptation, the desirability, feasibility and above all necessity of common metrics remains to be seen.
