Description: The Carbon Development Mechanism (CDM) has emerged as both a liability and an opportunity within the framework of the Paris Agreement. This dynamic presents a pivotal moment for Africa, offering the continent a chance to leverage its Pipeline of Activities (PoA) to its advantage. As the future of CDM activities hangs in the balance, their successful transition to the Paris Agreement context becomes crucial. Looking ahead, the upcoming COP22 holds significant promise. An agreement on the principle that CDM activities can transition into the Article 6.4 mechanism under specific conditions could lay a foundation for sustainable progress. Urgent action is essential, and an expedited initiation of Article 6.4, particularly by utilizing PoAs from the CDM, has the potential to sustain crucial emission reduction endeavors and prevent the erosion of Africa's hard-earned capacity. Climate finance emerges as a pivotal player in this transformative journey. Bridging the demand gap requires innovative solutions, and the existing African CDM pipeline stands ready to be harnessed. By aligning climate finance with the potential of Africa's PoA pipeline, the continent can effectively navigate the transition, ensuring its continued contribution to global emission reduction goals.
