Abstract: The Ministry of Environment and Forestry is mandated with undertaking, among others, National Environment Policy and Management, Forestry Development Policy and Management, Development of Re-afforestation and Agro-forestry, Restoration of Strategic Water Towers, Protection and Conservation of Natural Environment, Pollution Control, Conservation and Protection of Wetlands and Climate Change affairs. These tasks contribute to the achievement of national policy aspirations including Vision 2030, MTP 3 and the Big Four Agenda. Development of this Masterplan is aligned to these policy aspirations and the associated Medium Term Expenditure Framework. Cherangany-Elgeyo Hills ecosystem is located along the edge of the Great Rift Valley. The Hills are made of an old fault-block formation of non-volcanic origin forming an undulating upland plateau on the western edge of the Rift Valley. It encompasses two water towers, Elgeyo and Cherangany; and 22 forest blocks. The ecosystem is a critical water catchment area for Nzoia and Kerio rivers which flow to Lakes Victoria and Turkana respectively. The Cherangany-Elgeyo Hills ecosystem is also an important habitat for a wide range of biodiversity and harbours several regionally threatened animal and plant species.
